This district in Hanoi was fascinating. It's been around for 2,000 years but has been a market district for
several hundred years. It consists of 36 streets that each specialize in a particular craft or product - silver, bamboo,
silk, tools, gravestones, shoes, and on and on. We stayed here every night except when we went to Halong Bay.
We walked and took cyclos around and just watched it all go on.

Alley below our hotel room on the first day. |

Balcony view from the room of our first hotel. |

We got around in cyclos. Only bikes, scooters and cyclos are allowed in the Old Quarter - no cars. |

|
Scarves over faces are more for keeping skin light than keeping out pollution. |

|
Every corner had bia hoi (homebrewed beer). It was fun to sample, sit and watch the street scene. |

We think this mark represents a "third eye" in Buddhism. We saw several people who had this mark. |

|
We bought a couple books from this guy. We were cornered everywhere to buy stuff. |

|
Bia hoi is illegal. The cops would come with a loudspeaker, and people would close up shop quickly. |
This cop wasn't busting anyone though. He was slugging a few back with the locals.
